Cannabis IS Medicine: Event Recap | Brought to you by The Weedery | Aitkin, MN

Dec 4, 2024

The Weedery in Aitkin, MN offers low-dose hemp-derived products and expertise.

On the coldest day of the season so far, following the frenzy of Black Friday, a dedicated group gathered at American Legion Post 86 in Aitkin, MN, to learn about the therapeutic benefits of cannabis. Hosted by Tony and Holly Mindrum of The Weedery, this event featured an engaging presentation by Desiree Techau Fowlds, RN, HNB-BC, a Certified Holistic Nurse with extensive experience in holistic care and cannabis education.

A Journey Through Cannabis History

Desiree’s presentation began with a brief exploration of cannabis’s rich cultural history. Before the rise of pharmaceuticals, cannabis played a central role in traditional medicine across the globe. She highlighted how it has been used for centuries to treat various ailments, emphasizing its enduring relevance as a natural remedy.

The Endocannabinoid System & Homeostasis

A key focus of the presentation was the endocannabinoid system (ECS)—a vital network in the human body responsible for maintaining balance and homeostasis. Desiree explained how cannabis interacts with this system, helping to fill gaps and regulate essential bodily functions. This scientific insight provided attendees with a deeper understanding of cannabis’s therapeutic potential.

Community Connection & Q&A

Following the presentation, the discussion shifted to a more intimate Q&A session, where attendees asked questions about cannabis as medicine, its legal landscape, and practical tips for safe consumption. Tony and Holly Mindrum were on hand to share their expertise, discussing product selection and the importance of sourcing safe, legal cannabis.

Tony and Holly emphasized the role of The Weedery not only as a retail operation but also as a community resource. Their shop has become a gathering place for locals, fostering conversations and education about cannabis. The store features a variety of local products, including offerings from Cholly's Farm and Store (Garrison, MN) and Cuyuna Cannabis (Crosby, MN), underscoring their commitment to supporting regional businesses.

Cannabis as Holistic Care

Desiree, although not originally from Aitkin, has deep ties to the community through her family and work in home health care. With 17 years of holistic nursing experience, she advocates for integrating cannabis into healthcare in a thoughtful, informed way. She encouraged attendees to approach cannabis use cautiously:

  • “Start low and go slow” was a recurring theme.

  • She stressed the importance of open communication with healthcare providers, noting that cannabis can interact with other medications and treatment plans.

A Safe, Informed Approach

Both Desiree and the hosts underscored the importance of education and responsible use. Consumers were urged to prioritize safety and effectiveness when choosing products and to seek advice from knowledgeable professionals.
