The Conversation That Shifted Our Perspective on Post-Harvest

Mar 31, 2026

Ed Wells, Cannatrol

We sat down with Ed Wells from Cannatrol at Lucky Leaf, but like most good conversations in this industry, it didn’t start with business.

It started with life.

We caught up on family, weddings, moves across the country, and everything that’s changed over the past year. It’s a reminder that behind every company in cannabis, there are real people building something while navigating life in real time.

And then, naturally, the conversation shifted.

From life… to the business of cannabis.

Where the Real Opportunity Is

Most operators today are focused on the grow.

Better genetics. Better lighting. Better nutrients. Better yields.

And all of that matters.

But as Ed put it, we’ve reached a point where there are fewer levers left to pull in the grow itself. The real opportunity to differentiate is happening after harvest.

Drying and curing.

It’s a stage that doesn’t always get the same attention, but it should.

In markets like Minnesota, where flower is still commanding strong prices, small inefficiencies can have a big impact. Over-drying by just a few percentage points can mean losing thousands of dollars per harvest. And beyond yield, it directly affects consistency.

Consistency Builds Brands

One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation was simple:

Consistency is what turns a grow into a brand.

Consumers don’t come back for one great batch. They come back when they know what to expect every time. That level of consistency isn’t created in the grow room. It’s locked in during the drying and curing process.

Traditionally, that process has been manual and dependent on experience. A lot of feel, a lot of variability, and a lot of risk as operations scale.

What Cannatrol is building is a more controlled, repeatable approach.

Their current systems, including the C1 and C2, are already helping operators create consistent outcomes batch after batch. And with new products like the CXL expected to come to market in Q3, there’s a clear focus on expanding access to these tools for a wider range of operators, including home growers.

Building in Real Time

What stood out most about this conversation wasn’t just the technology. It was the mindset.

The cannabis industry is still being built in real time, especially in emerging markets like Minnesota. The operators who take the time to understand every part of the process, including post-harvest, are going to be in a much stronger position as the market matures.

We appreciate Ed and the Cannatrol team for continuing to show up, support the community, and share knowledge that moves the industry forward.
