The Part of the Industry That Gets Overlooked
Apr 3, 2026

We sat down with the team from the Center for Energy and Environment at Lucky Leaf, and like many of our conversations, it started simply.
A handshake. A quick introduction. A sense that there was more here than most people realize.
And as we got into it, that proved to be true.
The Part of the Industry That Gets Overlooked
There’s a lot of attention right now on licenses, brands, and product.
But behind the scenes, there’s another layer that’s just as important.
Energy. Infrastructure. Planning.
The decisions being made early, often before a facility is even built, are already shaping outcomes for operators across Minnesota.
And according to Brad and Tony, a lot of people are missing it.
Timing Matters More Than You Think
One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation was how often operators come in too late.
By the time many groups start thinking about energy efficiency or rebates, key decisions have already been made.
Equipment is selected. Layouts are finalized. Budgets are locked.
At that point, options become limited.
But when operators engage early, there are real opportunities on the table.
We’re not talking about small savings.
We’re talking about programs that can significantly reduce upfront costs, especially around lighting and facility design.
LED Rebates and Real Dollars
A moment that stood out in the conversation was around LED lighting.
It’s something most operators know they need, but not everyone understands how much support is available.
In partnership with providers like Grow Pros Solutions, CEE has been helping operators access rebate programs that can meaningfully impact project budgets.
For some, that’s the difference between staying on plan and going over budget.
For others, it’s the ability to reinvest those savings into other parts of the business.
Building Smarter From Day One
What this really comes down to is planning.
Not just building a facility, but building it the right way from the start.
Thinking about:
Energy load
Equipment choices
Long-term operating costs
And making decisions with those factors in mind.
Because once you’re up and running, it’s much harder to go back and adjust.
Minnesota Is Being Built in Real Time
What stood out most is how early this all still is.
Minnesota’s cannabis market is taking shape right now.
The operators who take advantage of resources like CEE, who ask the right questions early, and who think beyond just getting open, are going to be in a much stronger position long term.
We appreciate Brad, Tony, and the entire CEE team for taking the time to share their perspective and for the work they’re doing behind the scenes to support this industry.
